The Hidden Cost of Cheap Websites

The Hidden Cost of Cheap Websites

Every business wants value from a website project. That is sensible. But there is a difference between cost effective and cheap.

A cheap website can look like a saving at the start and become expensive later. The true cost often appears in maintenance, poor performance, limited flexibility and missed opportunities.

Cheap websites often make assumptions

Low cost website builds usually rely on speed. That often means using a template, installing plugins and avoiding deeper discovery.

For some projects, that may be enough. Not every business needs a bespoke build.

The problem starts when a cheap solution is used for a project that needs more thought.

The build is only part of the cost

The initial website build is not the full cost of ownership.

You also need to consider hosting, updates, security, content changes, future development, bug fixes and performance improvements.

A website that is difficult to maintain can cost more over two years than a better planned build would have cost from the start.

Poor foundations limit growth

Many businesses outgrow cheap websites quickly.

They want better landing pages, integrations with CRM systems, improved ecommerce functionality or more control over content. Then they discover the original setup cannot support it properly.

Design is not the only measure of quality

A website can look reasonable on the surface and still be badly built underneath.

Messy code, poor SEO structure, slow load times, weak accessibility and fragile plugin setups are not always obvious during sign off.

Cheap is fine when expectations are clear

There are times when a low cost website is the right answer. A simple holding page, a short campaign or a very early idea may not justify a larger investment.

The key is honesty. A cheap website should not be sold as something it is not.
